USAC Open Wheel Racing has been, and still is, a powerful stepping stone to a racing career.  NASCAR stars Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman, Kasey Kahne and others used USAC Midgets as their development series before becoming pros.

USAC Midgets are bad to the bone race cars.  They weigh 900 pounds without driver and make 380 hp. The short wheelbase, light nature of the cars lends itself to amazing on track moves. Many say USAC Midgets are the best driver development car and series there is.  

The challenge keeping many people from racing Midgets is cost. To buy a new Midget engine is $38,000 to $50,000. Yikes!   Many top teams rebuild the engines every 6-10 races at a cost of $4,000 to $10,000.  Because the engines are “on kill” … many teams carry a spare.  Double yikes!

Enter the USAC Ford Focus Midget.  The cars are basically the same … but the engine package is the big difference.  First, Ford is heavily involved in the series and all the engines today come from Roush Yates Engines in Mooresville, NC.  Sounds cool … but expensive.  Not!

The Ford Focus Race Engines are 2.0 liter, 16 valve, making 180+ horsepower and last three seasons or more ! The cost of a complete new Focus Midget engine package is only $6995 ... which is less than some full midget engine rebuilds. Our race team, Ron Sutton’s Winner’s Circle, has been in the series since 2004.  We have raced Combo Chassis cars, Pavement Chassis cars and a chassis design in-between that we called “Tweeners.”  We are one of the winningest teams in the series. We run pavement only and have no dirt experience.  Maybe a knowledgeable dirt Focus Racer will put up a web-site to help new folks going into dirt Focus racing.
